Booking Hyatt properties is an excellent way to get the most value out of your Chase, Capital One or Amex points.
RECENT INQUIRY: I have a Delta companion pass expiring on May 31 and would like to take a trip from MSP to the Caribbean or Latin America using Chase points to book accommodation. How can I get the most value out of my points?
STRATEGY: Determine where Delta flies (for a reasonable price), then check if there's an all-inclusive (AI) Hyatt in that location, as AI properties provide the ultimate value.
Date: Book and complete the trip by May 31
Location: Caribbean or Latin America
Flight: Delta Sky Team
Accommodation: Hyatt property with availability
STEP 1: Make sure you've already signed up for World of Hyatt, so you're able to book using points.
STEP 2: Go to Google Flights
Enter MSP to Caribbean (do not fill in a date)
Click EXPLORE
Click on ALL FILTERS
Select Sky Team (to get Delta flights) and set a maximum price
Click on the date field and set the dates to one-week in March (then check April, then May) to determine where Delta flies for reasonable prices during the months you plan to travel
To view prices to Latin America (or anywhere else using the same parameters), click on the map and move it around. It will display pricing for any location you include in the map area.
STEP 3: Log in to Hyatt to see if there are hotels in the Google Flights locations found in the previous step. To search only AI properties, view the Hyatt Inclusive Collection and click on Destinations.
HOTEL AVAILABILITY TIPS
Start searching as soon as availability is released (often 12 months in advance)
Hotels only release a certain number of rooms for points bookings
Points bookings are typically fully refundable, so availability can change if there are cancellations (so keep checking!)
Search one night at a time
If you use a range, it will show no availability if only one night isn't available
Get creative
If an entire week isn't open using points, you could use cash for a night OR you could split the trip in half and stay at two different accommodations
STEP 4: When you find availability, log into your credit card account and transfer points to your World of Hyatt account. Transfers are typically instant (but can take hours, sometimes days). You may have to refresh or log out and log back in to World of Hyatt to see the points.
STEP 5: Book the accommodation. You may have to book one night at a time if only certain rooms are available on certain dates.
For example, one night you may book a standard room and the next night a junior suite due to availability, etc. Book whatever is available and then reach out to the hotel via email, chat, phone to see what your options are for stringing the reservation together to avoid moving rooms.
